Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Lima

Upon your arrival in Lima, you will be met by our representative at the airport and transferred to your selected hotel facing the

ocean in Miraflores.

Meals: None

Day 2: Lima

Please note that today, we recommend that you eat a light breakfast for you to better enjoy all that is included in today's fascinating culinary experience.

Lima Gastronomy Adventure

Lima's food superstars are keeping up gastronomical traditions that have been around for generations. The city's traditional food is one of our favorite aspects of Lima and today our culinary expert will take you on a culinary adventure to remember. As you stroll through the charming bohemian neighborhood of Barranco, we will stop at different eateries and local restaurants planned according to your food preferences (and un-preferences!). You will discover, taste and even get immersed in the local Peruvian gastronomy through its varied ingredients, authentic flavors, recipes of bygone eras and stories related to them.

Today you will taste traditional home-style cuisine, resurrecting old traditional family recipes rather than reinventing them. You will not find fusion cooking here – just simple and delicious dishes. Remember to keep room for a traditional dessert or ice cream and the perfect cup of coffee, made from 100% Peruvian coffee beans, at one of the city's best coffee houses.

Colonial Lima

After lunch, meet your guide and enjoy a half day guided tour of Lima’s historically rich colonial city center. You'll begin with the Plaza de Armas, where the Government Palace, City Hall, Cathedral and Archbishop's Palace are located. You then continue to the San Francisco Monastery, which provides an impressive insight on how religious life was during Spanish colonial times. You will stop to visit the Monastery and descend into the convent’s intriguing catacombs that served as a burial ground until 1808; an extraordinary fact is that monks arranged the remains according to bone types, resulting in a fascinating display.

Located across from the Presidential Palace, step inside Casa Aliaga, built in 1535 by Don Jeronimo de Aliaga, who was a member of Pizarro's conquering forces. Today, seventeen generations later, the house is still owned by the Aliaga family with Gonzalo de Aliaga as its current inhabitant; it is known to be the oldest dwelling in the Americas to have been home to the same family. The mansion has survived several earthquakes and despite having been rebuilt and reshaped along almost five centuries, it remains one of the most remarkable exponents of colonial mansions in Peru. It is absolutely amazing inside: the inner patio is extraordinary, and an imposing wooden staircase leads up to the elegant salons that are richly decorated with colonial furniture.

Finally, proceed to a very special experience. Visiting the MALI (Art Museum of Lima) through a curator’s eyes, will provide insight to fully understand the history of Perú. In the hands of an expert curator, today you will engage in an outstanding discovery of Peru’s history through its art. The museum’s collections contain more than 3,000 years of art history, from the first Andean civilizations up until our days. Being an art lover at heart, with this passion, your curator will show you the most representative elements of all art periods related to Peruvian history: Pre Columbian, Colonial, Contemporary, Modern and Republican. With the threads woven together, you will have a much better understanding of the museum’s collections, which are all directly handled and well cared for by the curators. They are constantly involved in the acquisition of new works of arts, as well as attending to the conservation and display of this nation’s cultural heritage.

On top of that, the museum is housed in a captivating building of 1870, the Exhibition Palace, one of the most beautiful examples of the 19th century Lima architecture, where finally you will have exclusive access to the Salón Prado to make a toast with a glass of cava to finish this experience in the best way.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Lima Accommodations: Miraflores Park

A reinvented classic in Lima with probably the best Pacific Ocean views amongst all hotels, exquisite service and a prime location. Right on Lima’s upscale “Malecón,” where one can stroll or jog along its green sidewalk on a cliff overlooking the Pacific and enjoy stunning sunsets, it is also located within walking distance of one of Lima’s nicest commercial areas, and also has great dining options in its close vicinity. The Ocean View rooms are a must when staying here. We love Tragaluz, its restaurant, with art-walls, a cutting-edge menu and its cool-funky atmosphere. Every city needs its signature hotel; Lima has the Miraflores Park.

Day 3: The Sacred Valley

Our representative will meet you at the hotel and transfer you back to the airport to take your flight to Cusco.

Upon arrival in Cusco, you are driven to the “Sacred Valley of the Incas,” a succession of picturesque Andean towns, agricultural terraces, and many archaeological sites, as well as famous for the world’s best white corn. The mild climate, the varied and dramatic scenery of snow-capped mountains, flowering meadows, lush green hills and spectacular flora and fauna, make the Valley a prime adventure destination in South America.

At a lower elevation than Cusco, the Valley is a warmer and less physically taxing environment for visiting the many attractions of the region, including Machu Picchu.

Sacsayhuaman

On your way to the Sacred Valley you will visit Sacsayhuaman, which is the largest and most impressive of four archaeological ruins on the outskirts of Cusco. Built by the Incas, it served an important military function and was the site of a major battle with the Spanish in 1536. The complex was constructed out of massive stones, some weighing as much as 300 tons, cut to fit together without the use of mortar. A true enigma!

Farm to Table Lunch

Continue for lunch at Sarapampa, a typical Sacred Valley hacienda. Protected by its mountains and extraordinary climate, the Sacred Valley of the Incas is the cradle of one of the most exceptional corn varieties in the world, adapted to grow only within the boundaries of the valley. At the hacienda, we invite you to learn how the Incas developed such a unique corn variety, and how their ancestral techniques have survived along with the modern production of corn. Afterwards you will enjoy a delicious 7-course gourmet tasting lunch offering both indigenous ingredients as well as cuisines brought in during colonial times. After lunch, continue to your selected hotel in the Sacred Valley.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Day 4: Maras & Moray

This morning, visit the town of Maras, which grew in importance in the 17th century due to the commercialization of the locally produced salt. Learn about the facades of the ancient houses in Maras, which are made from finely worked stone, which give you an idea of the economic heights achieved by the town’s population at that time. Venture into one of the local “chicherias” or main square stalls and dare to try the famous “chicha”, a local drink made of fermented corn, a tradition dating back to Inca times!

Moray Terraces

Continue with the visit of the circular terraces of Moray, an agricultural “research laboratory” for the Incas where they studied temperature variation from one terrace to another in order to develop different crop varieties. Later, the hardier varieties of seeds were distributed throughout the Inca Empire. As you visit, dramatic snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba and Urubamba mountain ranges will be seen across the Urubamba River.

Your lunch experience today has been booked at a very special place, just by the ruins of Moray: MIL. Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez, of world-renowned Central restaurant in Lima, started this initiative turning his focus towards the Andean people’s ancient cultivation techniques to guarantee the highest quality produce. A km-0 dining experience, MIL also provides insight into where you are, the power and challenges of the surrounding nature, and a cultural understanding of the Andes as we travel through its most iconic products, including the endless varieties of potatoes and tubers, maize and its nourishing cereals.

The experience consists of eight courses drawing from eight ecosystems of elevation, and extreme and authentic local ingredients, including waters, solar infusions, and extracts. With time, this dynamic experience will change with the climate and the land.

Maras Pampas

After lunch, you cross the extensive Maras Pampas, where people farm the land and rear cattle and sheep. You continue until reaching the renowned, picturesque and unexpected geography of the “salineras” or saltpans, from where the salt has been extracted for generations, still today constituting Maras’ main source of income in a shared system of community work. The Urubamba Mountain range and its snow-capped peaks provide a spectacular background for your visit, which you may choose to do by vehicle or by walking through the area.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Sacred Valley Accommodations: Rio Sagrado

Very personalized, this wonderful retreat with lovely suites with terraces overlooking the lush gardens and two spectacular villas hosting up to 6, also features a spa and an outdoor pool. To us, this property enjoys one of most peaceful locations in the Sacred Valley with probably the best views to the Urubamba River.

Day 5: Ollantaytambo & Machu Picchu

This morning, visit Ollantaytambo, a still-thriving Inca village set below an ancient Inca fortress and temple with stunning views over the valley that makes you feel as if you have stepped back into the 15th century. Admire the magnificence of this important Inca site and stroll through the quaint streets of the present town.

Then we will take you to the station to board the Hiram Bingham luxury train to Machu Picchu. The train takes a spectacular journey through a changing landscape while you enjoy mimosas on board, passing lush fields and colourful villages in the foothills of the Andes. The journey is highlighted by wonderful vistas of the mountains and the beautiful Urubamba River, which runs through the Sacred Valley. You will be served a 4-course lunch on board just before arriving at your destination.

Machu Picchu Adventure

On arrival in the town of Aguas Calientes, board a bus to Machu Picchu and meet your guide for a complete tour that will take approximately two hours. Machu Picchu, which means “Old Mountain”, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the seven new wonders of the world. You will enjoy our time visiting the Sacred Inca citadel, exploring its main temples and hidden corners.

You will then head to the Tinkuy restaurant, located just outside of Machu Picchu, to enjoy an afternoon cocktail service. Finally, proceed to check-in at your selected hotel, located just next to the Machu Picchu main entrance, where you will enjoy dinner in the evening.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Machu Picchu Accommodations: Sanctuary Lodge

As the only hotel located adjacent to the mystifying ancient Inca citadel, this property is the luxurious and convenient way to experience Machu Picchu. Unlike the setting in which it sits, the hotel is understated. Natural beauty takes center stage with the green, low-lying roof blending seamlessly into its surrounds. Rooms are compact, but not having to stand in the often

long bus lines and being able to be one of the first in Machu Picchu definitely has its advantages.

Day 6: Machu Picchu & Cusco

Explore Machu Picchu

This morning you will have a second opportunity to visit Machu Picchu accompanied by your guide for further exploration of the site at your own pace. You could have the opportunity to hike up to the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain, from where one can experience spectacular views of all of Machu Picchu, the valleys and mountains that surround it (please note that the entrance to either mountain is not included and must be purchased separately in advance).

Enjoy an à-la-carte lunch at your hotel, after which you will have the rest of the afternoon at leisure (please bear in mind the hotel check-out time is at 11:00; after that, you will be able to leave your luggage in storage and use the public areas of the hotel). You could make another visit to Machu Picchu accompanied by your guide (entrance fee is not included and must be purchased in advance), or take the bus back to town and explore it and its colorful market.

Train to Cusco

In the late afternoon, proceed to the station on time to take the Hiram Bingham train to Cusco. Boarding this gleaming blue and gold luxury train is reliving a 19th century novel journey. Enjoy welcoming aperitifs, dinner and an excellent selection of wine. Taking the Hiram Bingham is dancing to local music while sipping pisco sours. Step out to the open-air observation car while the sun is setting over the mountain peaks and breathe in the sacred landscape. On arrival in Poroy station, you'll be assisted and transferred to Cusco for accommodation at your selected hotel located in the Historic Center.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 7: Cusco

Enjoy this morning at leisure for some exploration of Cusco on your own, go shopping or just relax in your hotel by the pool or at the spa.

Cusco Guided Walk

In the afternoon, your guide will meet you at the lobby to start your visit of Cusco. Walk to the Santo Domingo Convent, built over the legendary Qoricancha, which is the most important temple in the region with walls once plated with sheets of gold and devoted to worshiping the sun deity. Then, continue to the Plaza de Armas, or main square, to appreciate its beauty of legendary entryways, epic churches and lively atmosphere amidst the stunning mountain views.

You will stop to visit Cusco’s iconic Cathedral and see various expressions of the syncretism of the colonial times. Proceed to visit the Pre-Columbian Art Museum that used to be an Inca ceremonial court around 1450 AD. In 1580 it became the mansion of the conqueror Alonso Diaz and was restored much later to become the Pre-Columbian Art Museum of Cusco in June 2003. This extraordinary historic monument is home to the only museum in Peru dedicated to resurrecting the arts of ancient Peruvian cultures. The collection of 450 masterpieces date from 1250 B.C to.1532 A.D. They were selected from among 45,000 objects located in the storage of the Larco Museum in Lima, by curators Fernando de Szyszlo (a famous painter) and Cecilia Bákula (a prestigious art historian).

Finally, head to the MAP Café, which is located inside the courtyard of the Pre-Columbian Art Museum and offers one of the finest examples of Peruvian fusion cuisine in the country. You shouldn't miss the red and black quinoa flavored cannelloni with white truffles, or the hot ceviche of shrimp on stone. And make sure to leave room for dessert! The irresistible sweet delicacies have a delicious resemblance to art pieces within the museum.

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Cusco Accommodations: Palacio Nazarenas

Freshly and exquisitely decorated, with a rustic yet contemporary flair, this Cusco gem is the coolest hotel option in the city. We love the culinary creations at Senzo, the hotel restaurant facing the only five-star outdoor heated pool in all of Cusco, as well as the massages, reflexology and other therapies at Hypnoze Spa. The private butler service, oxygen-available rooms and its delightful amenities make it our top choice for guests appreciating ultra-refined service.

Day 8: Andean Explorer Train to Puno

Our representative will meet you at the hotel and transfer you to the station to take the luxury overnight train to Lake Titicaca. Board the Andean Explorer; settle down and unwind in your luxurious cabin as the train begins its journey southeast towards Puno.

In the evening, prepare yourself for an elegant dinner on board, while tasting some canapés and cocktails in the bar car. The train continues to Puno station, where it will stable for the evening.

As South America’s first luxury sleeper train, the Andean Explorer is our recommended suggestion for train lovers traversing the Peruvian Andes. The train travels along one of the highest routes in the world, crossing stunning, pristine landscapes on its way from Cusco to Lake Titicaca and Arequipa, or vice versa.

The train includes 20 carriages, featuring 2 dining cars, 1 lounge car, 1 bar car, 1 spa car and 1 observation car. A total of 70 passengers can be accommodated in the 35 cabins and, unlike the olden days of luxury rail travel, each bedroom is equipped with its own en-suite toilet and shower. The décor throughout the train is inspired by the texture and designs of Peru’s handwoven textiles and the soft natural tones of alpaca wool. The service provides a personal, concierge-like approach with staff available to handle your needs 24/7.

Considering Peru´s reputation as the world’s most exciting culinary destination, food is, of course, an important part of your train journey. Today you will start at mid-morning and visit 3 of the most authentic picanterías in Arequipa. In each picanteria, you will have the opportunity to try a typical, regional dish such as stuffed Rocoto chili or fried cuy (guinea pig) as well as a refreshing glass of chicha de jora. This adventure offers an incredible opportunity to experience the intense gastronomy of the Arequipa region while visiting some of the most renowned picanterías in Arequipa. Arequipean picanterías, originally chicherías, date back to the 16th century when they were small stores that sold corn and chicha on the outskirts of the city. As time passed, these tiendas started to prepare and sell various tasty traditional dishes, giving these places a positive social reputation.

Moreover, there are three elements that define the originality of the Arequipean picanterias. First, they sell products that range all the way from the coast to the Puno region. Second, their products demonstrate a deep mix of indigenous and Hispanic culture. Third, they create a feeling of equality between the rural and urban populations, allowing people from all walks of life to socialize in the same environment.

Colonial Arequipa

After your culinary experience, begin to explore the city in the Colonial district of Yanahuara, a neighborhood that is famous for its Andalusian-style churches and viewpoint of Carmen Alto that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Next we will continue to the neighborhood of San Lázaro where Arequipa was founded. In that neighborhood we will explore the Church of San Francisco, its beautiful plaza dating back to the 18th century, and the main square with its fascinating architecture. We will also stop at the Church of La Compañía de Jesús which was founded in the 17th century by the Jesuits and is famous for its cloisters.

Santa Catalina Monastery

Lastly, we will visit the Santa Catalina Monastery, the most important religious monument in Perú which was founded in 1579. The Santa Catalina Monastery is the most important religious monument in all of Peru. It is a small citadel of sillar, that after 400 years was restored and opened to the public. There we will have a guided visit of the grounds that extend over 20,000 square meters. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the history of the Catholic Church in Peru. Moreover, we will come to understand the way of life in the monastery and the challenges and tasks that occupied its inhabitants.

Then, enjoy dinner at your hotel!
